One Small Human

Goodbye Ron

01/09/2009

Having grown up in the Detroit area, it is rare that I am able to stand tall and say with pride, “I am from Detroit (or its outlying suburbs)!” Especially in light of the recent embarrassment that the Big 3 have caused all Michiganders.

However, over the years there have been a few things that, without hesitation, will cause me to proudly announce my Detroit heritage:

  • The Detroit Red Wings – winningest American hockey team, longest current playoff streak in all of professional sports and defending Stanley Cup champs. That’s why they call it Hockeytown.
  • The MC5 (this is usually followed by “You know, my dad’s band opened for them in high school.” It’s true.)
  • Motown records – what’s not to like about Motown?

and…

  • The Stooges

Obviously then, it was very sad to hear that Ron Asheton guitar player on 2 of Rock ‘n’ Rolls best albums ever died in his home this week. Iggy has always been and always will be the face of the Stooges. But Ron’s simple, addicting guitar riffs made them rock!

The Stooges have gained a lot of popularity in recent years even prompting a reunion tour. It has been nice to see the rest of the world start to understand how amazing the Stooges were. This sad news only makes me more upset with myself for missing the opportunity to see the Stooges live.

Goodbye Ron. Thanks for all the riffs!
