One Small Human

Top 10 + 3 of 2009

01/02/2010

gotta say, there was a lot of music that didn’t suck in 2009. i’ll spare you the philosophic ramblings this time around. i’ll make it short and sweet.

  1. the clientele – not their best, but better than a sharp stick in the eye or anything by the black eyed peas.
  2. pink mountaintops – black mountain’s softer side
  3. polvo – it took 10 years to erase the shitpile that is shapes. but it is now done. beggar’s bowl is easily one of the best songs they have ever written.
  4. the legends – much like polvo’s last pile of stink, the legends’ last album was gay euro disco that left me wondering what happened to the dude who created up against the legends. I’m happy to say, “the feedback has returned.”
  5. pains of being pure at heart – what is with kids these days and their fucking lame and pretentious band names? luckily i was able to look past poopy monikers and totally enjoy this pop masterpiece.
  6. flaming lips – I’m still not convinced whether this is their best or their worst album, but it kicks the pants off that fucking mystic turd. not to mention, it totally channels umma gumma-era floyd. loves me some psychedelic.
  7. do make say think – do make say think’s last album was also a boring pile of poo (i’m picking up on a theme here). this more than makes up for said offense; returning them to loud/soft artsy fartsy glory!
  8. califone – unlike some people in this list, Tim Rutili can’t seem to write a bad song and califone just keeps cranking out hauntingly beautiful music.
  9. grizzly bear – i kinda don’t want to like grizzly bear just because. call me crotchety. but this shit is beautiful. i just can’t ever see pictures of them or watch them live.
  10. mary onettes – sweet mother of sticky swedish pop! they sound exactly like everyone I’ve ever listened to, yet i couldn’t tell you who.
  11. the xx – this one took me a while. first couple of listens were dicey, but something kept me coming back for more. and now I’m lovin’ the minimal genius of this album.
  12. white rabbits – brit daniels should stick to producing. this album is better than EVERY spoon album. the percussion alone is top 10 worthy.
  13. animal collective – pand bear stole my heart and the number one spot last year. this year the whole crew takes top honors. this IS the new psychedelic.

and could tortoise please put together another boring-ass album? please?!
